An operational working definition of mindfulness is: the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment”’ (Jon Kabat-Zinn, 2003).

Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When we are mindful, we observe our thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them either good or bad.

Mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to experience. In practicing mindfulness, we retrain our minds to turn away from the endless stream of thoughts and emotions we so often engage in and learn to spend less time ruminating over what others have said, or meant. Instead of sleepwalking through life and letting it pass us by, we take charge and become more aware of our bodies, our mind and our environment.

We become more focused on the here and now, more accepting of ourselves and others. Mindfulness is a practice that is linked to the ancient traditions of meditation while also incorporating insights from psychotherapeutic techniques.

In this skills-based programme you will be introduced to the concepts of Mindfulness and will engage in a range of practical exercises that can be used to support oneself or others, manage negative thought patterns, be this depression, anxiety, addiction, self-harm or problems with self. Practice and theory will also cover approaches used to treat people who are experiencing chronic pain, bereavement, with the purpose of helping them  relate in a different way. Participants will also engage in compiling a personal eight-week mindfulness plan.

The series of workshops will be of interest to the general public, and those working in the helping professions to support themselves, their family, students or clients.  The various spiritual exercises will be based on the inspiring work of Jon Kabat-Zinn The exercises are suitable for those of all traditions and those of none.
